Effects of ionic liquids and pulsed electric fields on the extraction of antioxidants from green asparagus roots

Asparagus officinalis root (AR) contains valuable bioactive compounds that have beneficial health properties. The aim of this study was to optimize the extraction polyphenols and flavonoids in green AR using two novel technologies; pulsed electric field (PEF) ionic liquids (IL). Further, antioxidant activity obtained extracts determined. total polyphenol content, flavonoid content (TFC), (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, oxygen radical absorbance capacity Ferric reducing/antioxidant power assays) were PEF conditions (PEF strength 1.6 kV/cm, frequency 200 Hz pulse width 20 µs) resulted a higher yield as compared conventional solvent extraction, but had lower activities. optimal for IL by 0.5% 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride at solid: liquid (S:L) ratio 1:10 four min. 122 mg RE/ mL TFC which 70 80 folds more than PEF. PEF, safety ILs need further research.
